Employment Guide

New Job? Nervous? Try not to worry!

We have all been there, take a look at some of our tips to help get you started.

What to do before you start:
  • Plan your outfit- During your interview or induction, the employer would have told you what they expect you to wear, if you still feel uncomfortable, looking on Social Media or on their Website may be helpful if there are images of staff on there. If you can’t get in touch with the employer and not sure what to wear, you can’t go wrong with a white shirt and black trousers with appropriate shoes.
  • Research the company – It’s a good idea to go over it, familiarising yourself with the company, industry and what your job actually entails.
  • Plan your journey – You should always plan your journey in case there is traffic, you don’t want to be late to your new job.
How to dress:

Before starting your new job, it would be helpful to ask the employer for the dress code as some employers will ask you to wear your own clothes but to make sure you are smart at all times whereas others will want you to wear a certain uniform. Some employers will provide you with a uniform however, depending on the job role depends on what to wear.

What to take with you:
  • Ensure you take a notepad, pens, pencils with you so you can make plenty of notes on your first day.
  • Make sure you don’t forget your lunch – You can start to interact with your colleagues in the canteen and keep alert by bringing your lunch.
  • Don’t forget to bring a drink or two with you so you don’t get dehydrated!
What to do when you arrive:

In the morning:
Wake up earlier than needed so you can wake up, feel refreshed and get to work at least 15 minutes early to start your first day.

At work:
Keep your phone on silent and away, even if your colleagues are on theirs, you will be monitored throughout the apprenticeship. Smile and introduce yourself to colleagues, ask for their name and job role. (Try repeating their name so it is more likely you will remember it and shows you are listening.) The best way to get to know your colleagues is to join them at lunch time and try to join in the conversation. Don’t forget to take notes to refer back to.

Finishing the day:
The key to being a success is to make sure you are not the first one out. It will show you are willing by staying longer and not just there for the pay check.

Do’s and Dont’s:
  • DO ask questions: You need to understand everything and get up to speed so employers will expect questions.
  • DON’T be afraid to speak up: If you need help and can’t find the answers elsewhere, employers will want you to ask.
  • DO offer to help: There may be a time a colleague or manager will need help that you can assist with.
  • DON’T turn down help or advice: You could learn more and more by people offering to help.
